An exhaust air heat pump can cover the heating requirements of a well-insulated property. When used in combination with its integral immersion heater both heating and hot water needs can be met all year round, as the immersion heater can boost water temperatures when necessary. When working efficiently the unit can reduce energy consumption for heating by up to 50% when compared to conventional heating systems & the cost of this system will only be about £3,000 (plus VAT & subject to survey & installation costs) so the payback time for the homeowner is extremely good. Funding for this technology is also available through the low Carbon Buildings Program, which will lower the costs for installation even further. How Does It Work? Our exhaust air heat pump unit extracts air via ductwork connected to the warm areas of the building such as bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms & as the heat is removed from the air it is transferred into the heat pump’s refrigerant circuit before being discharged to the outside. The vapour compression cycle of the heat pump then raises the temperature of the refrigerant and transfers the heat into your water based system that can either warm the domestic hot water &/or heat a building, with a total floor area of up to 120m², via radiators or under floor heating. How Much Energy Could I Save? The efficiency of any heat pump is measured in Coefficient of Performance (CoP). A CoP of 3 means that for every kilowatt of electricity put in, you get 3 kilowatts of energy in the form of warm water. The flow temperature of the warm water is typically between 35oC and 45oC; much lower than achieved by a standard domestic boiler. The units are perfectly capable of generating higher temperatures but the CoP suffers meaning the economic and ecological benefits may be affected. Keeping the temperature at the lower end of the scale keeps the system operating at maximum efficiency and as it can be functional at all times, the controls for this system enables a CoP of up to 3.4. The exhaust air heat pump is the perfect partner for under floor heating giving comfort, low running costs, long life and minimal maintenance.
